The Copts, one of the oldest religious minorities in the Arab world and long-time residents of Egypt, make up 15% of the population. Historically marginalized and constantly targeted by the wider community, most of them live in extreme poverty, in difficult neighborhoods, surviving through the humblest of jobs. They are referred to as “Zabbaleen,” which means “garbage collectors.” In fact, the Copts of Cairo live in the Moqattam district, an area filled with waste, where the only means of livelihood is collecting and recycling garbage. The filmmaker is guided through the neighborhood to discover this ancient religious minority and how they live in defense of the one thing most precious to them: their faith.
